What Is DTF Printing?

DTF Printing Explained: Full-Colour Prints on Almost Any Fabric

DTF stands for direct-to-film. Your design is printed in full colour onto a special film, coated with an adhesive powder, then heat-pressed onto the garment. The film is peeled away and the design stays bonded to the fabric.

Because the artwork is printed digitally, there are no screens to make and no limit on colours. Gradients, shading, fine lines and photographic detail come out cleanly on light or dark garments, and on cotton, blends and polyester. That makes DTF a good choice for small runs, test designs and personalised pieces, from 10 pieces per design.

DTF has limits, and we will tell you what they are. The print sits on the fabric as a thin, flexible layer, so a very large solid block of colour can feel less soft than screen printing or sublimation. For big runs of a simple one- or two-colour logo, screen printing is usually cheaper per piece. If you are unsure, our guide to t-shirt printing methods explains the differences.

Choosing a Print Method

DTF vs Screen Printing vs Sublimation vs Embroidery

We offer all four methods in-house, so our advice is based on what suits your order rather than what we happen to sell. Here is how DTF compares. You can also read our sublimation printing page for all-over designs.

DTF is ideal when…

  • Your artwork has many colours, gradients or fine detail
  • You want the same quality on light and dark garments
  • The order is small or mixed, with several designs or names
  • The fabric is cotton, a blend or polyester

Choose another method when…

  • You need hundreds of pieces with a simple logo — screen printing is usually cheaper
  • You want an all-over design on polyester — use sublimation
  • You want a raised, premium logo on a polo or cap — use embroidery

Common Questions

DTF Printing FAQs

What is DTF printing?

DTF means direct-to-film. The design is printed onto a film, coated with adhesive powder and heat-pressed onto the garment. It gives full-colour, detailed prints without screens, on cotton, blends and polyester.

How much does DTF printing cost in Dubai?

The price per piece depends on the size of the design, the number of print positions, the quantity and the garment. Send us your artwork, garments and quantities and we will give you a free, itemised quote.

Is DTF better than screen printing?

Neither is better in every case. DTF suits detailed, multi-colour artwork and small or mixed runs. Screen printing is usually cheaper for large runs of a simple one- or two-colour logo. We offer both in-house and will recommend the one that fits your order.

Does DTF printing crack or peel?

A well-applied DTF print lasts well when cared for properly. Wash the garment inside out at a moderate temperature, avoid harsh tumble drying, and do not iron directly on the print. Like any printed layer, it will wear faster if it is washed hot or ironed.

Can you DTF print on polyester?

Yes. DTF bonds to polyester as well as cotton and blends. Some performance fabrics are heat-sensitive, so we test them before bulk printing. For an all-over design on polyester, sublimation may be the better option.

Can you DTF print on dark or black t-shirts?

Yes. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on dark and black garments as well as light ones, and the colours stay clear and bright.

What is the minimum order for DTF printing?

Ten pieces per design. Sizes can be mixed within the same order, and you can include different designs or names across a run.

How long does a DTF order take?

Samples are usually ready in around 7 days, and bulk production takes 2–4 weeks after approval. Tell us your deadline at the start and we will plan around it.

Can each piece have a different design or name?

Yes. Because DTF needs no screens, individual names or small design changes are practical. Send us a list with sizes and we will personalise each piece.

Do you deliver DTF orders outside Dubai?

Yes. We deliver across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates.
