Screen Printing vs DTF vs Sublimation: Which Is Best for Company T-Shirts?

Screen Printing vs DTF vs Sublimation: Which Is Best for Company T-Shirts?

Ordering branded t-shirts for your staff, an event or a campaign in Dubai? The print method you choose decides how the shirts look, how long the print lasts and what you pay per piece. This guide compares the three most common t-shirt printing methods — screen printing, DTF and sublimation — so you can pick the right one for your order.

The short answer

  • Screen printing is best for larger quantities of a simple logo with a few solid colours.
  • DTF (direct-to-film) is best for detailed, full-colour artwork and smaller runs on cotton or blends.
  • Sublimation is best for all-over, photo-quality prints on polyester — sports kits, jerseys and activewear.

Screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil, one colour at a time. Each colour needs its own screen, so there is a set-up step — but once the screens are ready, every extra shirt is fast and economical to print. That is why screen printing remains the go-to for bulk company t-shirts, school events and merchandise.

Strengths

  • Lowest cost per piece on larger orders
  • Bright, opaque colours that stand out on dark fabric
  • Very durable through repeated washing

Limitations

  • Not ideal for photographs or designs with many colours
  • Set-up makes very small runs less economical
  • Every piece carries the same design — no individual names

DTF printing

DTF (direct-to-film) prints your design onto a special film, which is then heat-pressed onto the garment. It reproduces fine detail and unlimited colours, works on cotton, blends and polyester, and needs no screens — so it suits short runs and designs that change from piece to piece.

Strengths

  • Unlimited colours and fine detail, including gradients
  • Works on light and dark garments and most fabrics
  • Good value for small and medium quantities, and easy to personalise

Limitations

  • The print sits on top of the fabric, so large solid areas feel heavier than a screen print
  • On very large runs, screen printing usually works out cheaper

Sublimation printing

Sublimation turns special inks into a gas under heat, which bonds into polyester fibres. The design becomes part of the fabric, so it never cracks or peels, and it can cover the entire garment edge to edge. It is the standard method for football and cricket kits, running shirts and all-over printed activewear.

Strengths

  • Photo-quality, all-over designs with no feel on the fabric
  • Will not crack, peel or fade with washing
  • Easy to add individual names and numbers

Limitations

  • Works only on polyester or high-polyester fabric
  • Needs white or light-coloured fabric, because the ink is transparent

Which method should you choose?

  1. Staff or event t-shirts with your logo, 100+ pieces? Screen printing.
  2. A colourful or detailed design, or under 50 pieces? DTF.
  3. Sports kit, jerseys or all-over prints? Sublimation.
  4. Polo shirts for front-of-house staff? Consider embroidery for a premium, long-lasting logo.

Many orders combine methods — for example, an embroidered chest logo with a screen-printed back. Our team will recommend the best mix for your design, fabric and budget.

Frequently asked questions

Which t-shirt printing method lasts the longest?

Sublimation lasts longest because the ink becomes part of the polyester fibres and cannot crack or peel. Screen printing is also very durable on cotton. DTF lasts well when washed inside out at a moderate temperature.

What is the cheapest way to print company t-shirts?

For larger quantities of a simple logo, screen printing has the lowest cost per piece. For small runs or many colours, DTF is usually better value because it needs no screens.

Can you sublimate on cotton t-shirts?

No. Sublimation only bonds properly with polyester. For cotton t-shirts, use screen printing or DTF.

Can you print individual names on each shirt?

Yes, with DTF or sublimation. Screen printing is designed for repeating the same design on every piece.

What is the minimum order at Milano Group?

Ten pieces per design, across all print methods.
